Abstract


Arrays of optical antennas reflect and refract beams with angles that depend on the phase shift gradient along the surface with respect to the incident beam. These beams obey generalized Snell’s laws with negative refraction and reflection over certain ranges of the angle of incidence, as well as modified critical angles for reflection and critical angles for reflection. When the phase gradient forms an angle with the plane of incidence, the refracted and reflected beams are no longer coplanar, giving rise to a three dimensional generalization of the above laws that allows unprecedented opportunities to manipulate beams and engineer wavefronts.
