Scattering-matrix approach to the radiative heat transfer between three arbitrary bodies

Abstract


We calculate the heat transfer occurring in a three-body system when the three
bodies are placed at three different temperatures and the system is immersed in an environment having a fourth temperature. The result is deduced in the framework of macroscopic electrodynamics and the result is expressed as a function of the classical scattering operators of each body. The approach is valid for any choice of shape and dielectric properties of the bodies. We discuss the theoretical derivation and give numerical results in the case of three parallel planar slabs of finite thickness. The interplay between surface properties and cross-interactions between the three bodies is discussed.
