Abstract

We present a novel nanophotonic strategy to greatly augment the absorption of thin-film materials over a large range of wavelength. The absorption enhancement is polarization insensitive and highly efficient at all incident angles. The introduction of a properly engineered 2D random structure gives rise to guided disordered modes in the absorbing material, which traps light impinging from the third direction thus enhancing the absorption. This photonic architecture can be used to increase the absorption efficiency of third-generation solar cell.
