MetacMed

MetacMed (Acoustic and Mechanical Metamaterials for Biomedical and Energy Harvesting Applications) is a Doctoral Network funded by the EU under the Horizon Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (GA no. 101119738). It aims to link basic research on acoustic and mechanical metamaterials to health and well-being issues. 12 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) have been recruited across the EU, UK, and Switzerland, exploring ways in which human health can be improved using metamaterials, such as improving the resolution of biomedical ultrasound imaging for cancer diagnostics, designing better spinal implants, monitoring bone healing, and developing insoles to aid human walking. Another area of interest is the development of metamaterials for energy harvesting, to better power medical devices and reduce reliance on conventional power sources. MAGNIFIC

The MAGNIFIC (Materials for a Next-Generation of (nano-)Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems) project is a collaborative European research project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement No. 101091968), with a duration of 48 months. Started on 1 December 2022, it brings together leading academic institutions, research centres, and industrial partners across Europe to develop a scalable nano-opto-electro-mechanical systems (NOEMS) platform for next-generation information and communication technologies. The project exploits the interaction between electrons, photons, and phonons in CMOS-compatible nanocrystalline silicon and aluminium nitride to realise compact, low-power devices for signal generation, modulation, and frequency conversion in the GHz range. By combining expertise in advanced materials, nanofabrication, photonics, acoustics, and mechanics, MAGNIFIC aims to establish a disruptive technology platform for future 5G/6G, IoT, and satellite communication (SATCOM) systems while strengthening Europe's leadership in integrated photonic and microelectronic technologies. Find out more at euproject-magnific.com.
